BBC Treats Us With Tokyo Olympics Trailer
With EURO2020, the Copa America, and now Wimbledon in full swing it’s easy to forget that the Tokyo Olympics is coming. JK!
The US Olympic Trials have given us a taster of the quality we can expect to see this summer. Adding to that, the long-awaited showdown between Kenenisa Bekele and now movie star Eliud Kipchoge, the inevitability of serial winners like Simone Biles, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Armand Duplantis, we’re in for an incredible few weeks indeed.
And the folks at BBC Creative have created a masterpiece to get us even more in the mood. Drawing inspiration from the rich culture of Tokyo, the trailer takes us on a one minute spectacular of neon signs, market stalls, arcade games and even a Gashapon parlour featuring Katarina Johnson-Thompson toys. Regardless of how many times you watch it, you’ll spot something different every time, whether that’s the anime touches, Street Fighter style ‘choose your character’ graphics detailing some of the big face-offs of the games, or the nods to the new sports included this year such as skateboarding or climbing.
The Tokyo Games has been the subject of huge controversy since its inception with a large majority of the Japanese population believing that the ever-growing cost of hosting the Olympics could be better spent elsewhere. This coupled with the more personal troubles of Japanese poster girl for the games, Naomi Osaka taking time away from the court to better her mental health after pressures from the sport, means that the showpiece event of the summer has had its fair share of negative news stories. But as it nears and more films like this are produced, we can’t wait to see what Japan and all of the athletes competing this year will treat us to. It’s going to magic.
