Cheptegei Just Ran 5km Really, Really Fast
Yesterday, Ugandan superhuman Joshua Cheptegei broke the 5km world record in Monaco with a disgustingly fast 12 minutes 51 seconds.
Leading from the front, Cheptegei basically ran really, REALLY fast (2:34p/km to be precise) before crossing the line 27 seconds (27 seconds!) faster than the previous world record held previously by Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto.
Watching footage of the race, it was apparent that the 23 year old was eyeing up this sort of time when viewers could see him looking at his watch 2 minutes from the end, the same way you might if you were tanking it towards a McDonald's just moments before they stop serving breakfast.
Here's a few statistics to put Cheptegei's time into some context:
He ran the equivalent of 50 X 00:15 100m races.
In the time he ran, you could pour only 6 perfect Guinness pints. The 7th wouldn't settle in time.
Or you could listen to half of Pink Floyd's longest studio track.
In dog years he ran the Monaco 5k in just under an hour and a half.
Inspired performance young man. 👏👏👏
