Legendary YouTuber Casey Neistat Is All Of Us Striving For Sub-3

The sub-3 marathon is one of the most fetishised achievements in amateur sport, standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of a hole-in-one in golf. The marathon milestone however, is more a mark of consistency and hard work, as opposed to a potential lucky break.

I don’t want to downplay getting a hole in one but in reality, the highest of handicaps can achieve one with the right shot, the right conditions and a helping hand from the golfing gods. Plus you get a shot at it 4 or 5 times every time you play. For a golfer that plays weekly, that’s over 200 attempts in a year. going sub-3 cannot be achieved with luck. The feat takes years of preparation, a smooth lead up to one or maybe two chances in the calendar year. This struggle is perfectly captured by YouTube legend, Casey Neistat in his latest film, Sisyphus and the Impossible Dream.

Neistat's films typically feature a blend of personal experiences, travel adventures, and social commentary, which are all found in his 12 minute retrospective that utilises years of footage and the many races in which he has attempted a sub-3 marathon.

His ambition for the feat was born out of being told he would never run again following a scooter accident in 2007. He describes his ‘comeback’ as a Sisyphean struggle for an arbitrary goal others think is just a ‘cute hobby’. Anybody striving for this goal will feel how deeply tormenting this experience is. Especially if like me, your wondering about the demise of your own physical ability as you near your 30s. But on the flip side, the film is proof that the hard work pays off.
